Child Struck Intervening During Domestic Dispute At Woodbridge Home, Police Say

A 12-year-old trying to intervene during a domestic disturbance in Prince William County paid the price after being struck by a man going after a female family member, police say.

Woodbridge resident Ajmal Mayar, 39, is facing a host of charges following an incident on New Year's Eve that resulted in the child being struck during an argument that turned physical.

Officers from the Prince William County Police Department were called to a home in the 16400 block of Woodbridge shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon to investigate reports of a domestic-related assault that happened earlier in the day.

According to police, a 36-year-old woman and Mayar - a family member - were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated, leading to him allegedly striking her several times and grabbing her neck.

During the attack, police say that a 12-year-old family member attempted to intervene, and was also struck by Mayar in the process.

Later, when the woman attempted to call the police, investigators say that Mayar took. her phone and smashed it before she was able to get free and contact the authorities.

Both the woman and child reported minor injuries.

Mayar was charged with two counts of domestic assault and battery, as well as one count each of strangulation and preventing the summoning of law enforcement.

His next court date is pending and bond information was unavailable on Tuesday.
